THE BEEPING FROM DHARMA’S alarm awoke Emma from her slumber. She rubbed her eyes. For a moment, she had forgotten where she was.

“Dharma, stop,” she commanded.

The beeping went silent.

“Yes, Dr. Clark, she’s awake now,” Brianna said. “I’ll hand her the phone.”

Emma took the phone from her. “Hello?”

“Hello Emma, this is Dr. Clark. I was just leaving a message with your friend. How are you feeling?”

She rubbed her eyes again, still drowsy from her nap. “I feel fine.”

“Any changes to your dreams so far?”

“No, other than I slept deeper just now, but I imagine that has to do with the anesthesia.”

“You’re probably right. Listen, Emma, I have something I need to talk to you about.”

Emma sensed concern coming from his voice. Her eyes widened. “Did the procedure go as you expected?”

“It’s too early to tell, but this has nothing to do with the procedure.”

“What is it then?”

“I was reviewing my notes from our sessions. At first, I was looking for a connection between Herod and John. But when I stepped back, I noticed an unusual pattern that I’d like you to examine.”

“What kind of pattern?”

There was silence.

“Dr. Clark?”

“It’s challenging to describe over the phone,” he replied. “I’d like to send you an image of my notes for you to look at.”

“OK.”

“I’ll be honest. I don’t completely know what to make of it,” he said. “It’s not exactly within my field of expertise, but I recall you talking about your father being a pastor. It may be worth getting his opinion on this.”

Why would I want my father’s opinion? “OK, please send me the image. I’ll reach out to my father if I think it will help.”

“OK, Emma. Goodbye now.”

She clutched her phone and stared at its screen.

“Alright Emma, give me your phone back,” Brianna said.

“No, wait!” she exclaimed. “I’m waiting for Dr. Clark to send me something.”

The phone chimed.

“That must be it.” She opened the notification. As expected, it was an image of Dr. Clark’s notes. She read the notes to herself.

She shook her head. I don’t get it.

She read it again.

Her eyes bulged; she let out an audible gasp.

“What is it?” Brianna asked. She rushed to look over Emma’s shoulder.

Noah–Excessive drinking–Gluttony

John–Sexual predator–Lust

Rico–Heartbreak/envy/relationship with Leah –Envy

Zack–Distracted by money–Greed

Jonah–Unemployed; walls of filth closing in–Sloth

Herod–Break up attributed to pridefulness/shame–Pride

Davis–Jealousy, anger management issues, violent–Wrath?

Emma stood up, stunned by the connection Dr. Clark made. “It can’t be a coincidence.”

“He must have organized the list in chronological order,” Brianna said.

“He did,” Emma replied.

“Why do you think he has a question mark next to the word wrath?” Brianna asked.

Emma brought the phone closer to her face and leaned in as she inspected the image further. “We talked about my past with Davis at length, but we haven’t discussed my dreams of him yet. I would guess that’s why.”

“You haven’t discussed your dreams of him?” Brianna asked with a raised brow.

Emma sensed there was something more to her look. “Yes, why?”

“I didn’t know you were dreaming of him.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed in disbelief. “I must have told you.”

She shrugged her shoulders.
